Usually the older the book is, the worse it tests. We urge caution for older and in particular antique books, especially books made with hand colored plates, which may contain toxic pigments.

In the 1920s, manufacturers were selling radium infused tonics and lead paint using cartoon ads like the little Dutch Boy. Safety standards were virtually non-existent. We recommend keeping antique books out of reach of children and books made prior to 1985 if they include brightly painted covers, leather covers, vinyl tape on the binding, or hand painted plates. New books created using historical methods such as lead type are best avoided or kept out of reach of children. We recommend washing hands after handling very old books.

Where You Can Buy Similar Products:

Disclosure: These are Amazon affiliate links.
