Gold can test positive for trace cadmium and mercury. New sterling silver is easily found through reputable companies and typically non-detect for lead, cadmium, and mercury. Stainless steel*, tungsten*, or titanium are also good options. *if you do not have a nickel allergy.
For glam we chose examples made of natural lead-free gems, lab created gems with the same composition as their natural counterparts, cubic zirconia, and untreated pearls.
We do not recommend lead crystal, brass, unknown metals, costume pieces, unknown faux gemstones, or vintage faux pearls, which can contain lead.
For brands we recommend established jewelry companies based in the United States or Europe. Established brands that sell jewelry nationwide are likely to be compliant with California’s stringent new restrictions on lead in adult jewelry, which sets a 500 ppm limit on lead in electroplated and uncoated metals. These restrictions were enforceable as of mid-2020.
