This glass was purchased from IKEA around 2021. It is a beautiful melon pink color and cost only $2.49. The logo is molded at the base. Colorants in glass may occasionally test positive for lead, cadmium, and other metals.
How do you think it tested via XRF?
Test Reading:
Reading on the Base:
Element of Interest | Parts per million (ppm) | Error Range |
---|---|---|
Antimony | 9 | +/- 4 |
Other Elements | +/- | |
Sn | 46 | +/- 3 |
Zn | 132 | +/- 8 |
The sample was tested in consumer goods TestAll mode using a Niton XL3t 700S for at least 30 seconds. Results are rounded to the nearest whole number.
Test Summary:
Trace antimony was detected. We do not have a concern for trace antimony or other trace metals in glass.
No other elements of interest were detected.
We think this is a great product and works as advertised. Even though colored glass may test positive for trace levels of lead and other toxic elements, we do not have a concern because the glass should not leach those materials into your beverage.
That being said, we do not recommend the use of lead crystal for food or drink. Crystal can test at over 300,000 parts per million and can leach lead into food and drink, particularly when consuming acidic foods and beverages. Crystal is especially of concern for children and pregnant women. There are many inexpensive and beautiful alternatives to crystal.
We Prefer:
We like new clear glass which is typically lead free. We do not have a concern with trace lead found in colored glass. To avoid lead coatings and highly leaded glass we recommend passing on unknown fine cut glass, metallic edged glass, painted glass, or marked crystal.
When possible, we recommend that all items used by children in the kitchen be lead free, with the exception of trace lead in products that are leach tested, preferably under 90 ppm lead on surface coatings, which is considered to be within legal safety limits for children’ s products.
