KiwiCo Poppy’s Colorful World

Here is a color changing bath book for babies which was included in a recent KiwiCo box we ordered in 2022. KiwiCo has developed a selection of toy subscription kits catering to kids of different ages and interests, with some excellent options for youngsters interested in STEM. As a soft plastic book, we were curious about its composition.

How do you think this example tested?

Reading on the Cover:

Other Elements

*When the error range for an element is 50% or more of its value, the element is considered present but not quantified.

All samples were tested in consumer goods TestAll mode using a Niton XL3t 700S for at least 30 seconds. Results are rounded to the nearest whole number.

How did this item perform compared to lead limits for kid’s products?

We Prefer:

We like newer books like those by KiwiCo that are educational.

Books printed prior to 1986 may contain lead in the ink. Usually the older the book is, the worse it tests. We urge caution for older and in particular antique books, especially books made with hand colored plates, which may contain toxic pigments.

In the 1920s, manufacturers were selling radium-infused tonics and lead paint leveraging cartoon ads like the little Dutch Boy. Safety standards were virtually non-existent. We recommend keeping antique books out of reach of children and books made prior to 1985 if they include brightly painted covers, leather covers, vinyl tape on the binding, or hand painted plates. New books created using historical methods such as lead type are best avoided or kept out of reach of children. We recommend washing hands after handling very old books.
