Bamboo Cooking and Serving Spoon

This spoon was purchased after 2019. It is an unbranded product and it was bought from a discount store.

How do you think our serving spoon tested via XRF?

Reading on the Wood:

Element of InterestParts per million (ppm)Error Range
None Detected
Other Elements
Nickel (Ni)*6+/- 3
Zinc (Zn)13+/- 2
Bromine (Br)*2+/- 1
Iron (Fe)*12+/- 7
*When the error range of an element is 50% or more off its value, the element is considered present but not quantified.

The sample was tested in consumer goods TestAll mode using a Niton XL3t 700S for 60 seconds. Results are rounded to the nearest whole number.

Test Summary:

No elements of interest were detected. A few very trace elements were detected, and most were difficult to quantify. We have zero concern with using this or other uncoated wood and bamboo products.

We think this is a fine product and works as advertised.

We Prefer:

We like stainless steel and wood serving spoons. Bamboo is very unlikely to test positive for lead and this example tested lead free.

We recommend wood products and stainless steel for cooking. Bamboo is acceptable but we like hard wood spoons without glues, stains, or mineral oil finishes. This our personal preference for an overall non-toxic product and not based on any concern for heavy metals.

We avoid scratching stainless steel utensils on metal pans to minimize leaching of chromium and nickel. We’ve had good results using wood utensils.

To avoid lead in kitchen utensils we recommend passing on vintage and antique utensils made of unknown metals, mixed metals joined with solder, brass, or decorative enamel, crystal, or ceramic accents. We avoid painted markings or finishes and etched logos are preferred.

We recommend avoiding vintage plastic utensils, which can contain high levels of lead or BPA.

When possible, we recommend that all items used by children in the kitchen be lead free, with the exception of trace lead in products that are leach tested, preferably under 90 ppm lead on surface coatings, which is considered to be within legal safety limits for children’ s products.
