IKEA OFTAST Glass Serving Bowl

Like similar products from Corelle, this serving bowl is made from tempered glass. We have not owned it long enough to evaluate its durability. However, it is lightweight and resistant to chips. IKEA has a series of dishes bowls and plates under the OFTAST label made entirely of tempered glass. At at only $2.49 for a large bowl and .99 cents for a dinner plate these are quite a steal.

How do you think our bowl tested via XRF?

Reading on the Bowl (No Logo):

Element of InterestParts per million (ppm)Error Range
None Detected
Other Elements
Barium (Ba)7,051+/- 97
Chromium (Cr)1,287+/- 132
Iron (Fe)113+/- 42
Zirconium (Zr)413+/- 6

The sample was tested in consumer goods TestAll mode using a Niton XL3t 700S for 60 seconds. Results are rounded to the nearest whole number.

Test Summary:

No elements of interest were detected.

The company has cleverly omitted the bottom logo. Many logos on dishes contain added lead.

We Prefer:

We use these bowls and enjoy their lightweight characteristics. They are typically lead free, whereas alternatives made from glazed stoneware typically contain trace lead in their components. We have an article here about glazed dishes and leach test standards that are important to be aware of.

We own plain glass sets and avoid decorative markings. However, brand new dishes of any kind are leach tested so we do not have a concern with using them. We do prefer to avoid anything intentionally made with high levels of lead or cadmium because it is not environmentally friendly to source these materials and dishes wear over time.

When possible, we recommend that all items used by children in the kitchen be lead free, with the exception of trace lead in products that are leach tested, preferably under 90 ppm lead on surface coatings, which is considered to be within legal safety limits for children’ s products.
